Art is for everyone. Since we’re all different, we understand that you may have specific needs, and we’ll do our best to meet them.

Accessibility Plan

This plan is about accessibility at the National Gallery of Canada. We want to be more accessible to people with disabilities. This plan is part of the Accessible Canada Act (ACA). The ACA is a new law that will help make all of Canada more accessible for people with disabilities.

Tours

Adapted tours introduce visitors with disabilities to the Gallery and its collections using sensory based strategies. Registration is required three weeks in advance for some activities. 

SPARK! is a program designed for individuals living with dementia, and their care partners.

Art InSight is a program for individuals who are blind or have low vision, and their guests.

Family

Strollers are available for free. No reservation is required. Child carriers must be worn on the front.

All bathrooms have a diaper-changing tables. 

 

Service Animals​

Service animals are welcome in all Gallery spaces. Each animal must be clearly identified by visual indicators such as a vest or harness. Other animals are not permitted in the building.

All-Gender Washroom

An all-gender washroom accessible to all members of the public is located on the lower level of the Gallery (access from Scotiabank Great Hall).

Allergies​

Please contact Visitor Services at 613-990-1985, 1-800-319-ARTS (2787) or [email protected] ​for any questions or inquiries. 

Hand sanitizer is offered at the entrance to the building. Visitors with allergies can use their own sanitizing gel.


Mobility​

All galleries and facilities are wheelchair accessible. 

Wheelchairs and walkers are provided free of charge. No reservation required.

Electric scooters are available at the Gallery and can be borrowed free of charge. Please contact Visitor Services to make a reservation at 613-990-1985, 1-800-319-ARTS (2787) or [email protected].

Accessible parking spaces are available in our underground parking. Regular parking fees apply.

Cloakroom

The cloakroom is free of charge. Bags larger than 30 × 40 × 12 cm (12 × 16 × 5 inches), backpacks, luggage and umbrellas must be checked in the cloakroom, where you can also check your coat. 

Accommodations for personal items can be made for persons with disabilities. 

Attendant​

The National Gallery of Canada offers free admission to one support person accompanying a person with a disability. 

Standard fees apply for the visitor with a disability. Please inquire at the box office.

ASL Interpreting

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is available for NGC events and programs when requested a minimum of 10 business days in advance of the event. Email [email protected] with the event name, date and time.

A sensory kit containing dark glasses, noise-reducing earmuffs, and three fidget items.

Sensory Support Kits

Sensory support kits are available to borrow, free of charge. Ask a staff member at the Main Entrance, or in the Scotiabank Great Hall.

Each kit contains:

  • Dark glasses to dim bright light
  • Over-the-ear adjustable noise-reducing earmuffs
  • Three fidget items:
    • A stress ball
    • A pop-it
    • A fidget spinner
