Land Acknowledgement

The National Gallery of Canada, with a mission to share art and culture with all, is situated on the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation. We respect, honour and acknowledge the Algonquin Nation’s stewardship of this land, from time immemorial and into the future.

Ankosé is an Anishinaabemowin word that emerged through conversation with Elders, and means “Everything is connected.”

As part of the Gallery’s commitment to honouring and respecting the rights and cultural histories of the Indigenous peoples of this land, we have embarked upon a process of renewal and engagement.

We will be continuing to consult with Indigenous Elders, knowledge-keepers and leaders on ways to appropriately and respectfully acknowledge not only this territory, but our commitment to the First Peoples of this land, in a shared journey of cultural and artistic discovery.
