Prints, Drawings and Photographs Study Room at the National Gallery of Canada.

The Study Room is open to individuals interested in researching the collection, and to small academic groups. In specially designed bright and quiet surroundings, researchers and students can view original works of art on paper that are part of the National Gallery’s national collections of prints, drawings and photographs.

Over 26,000 works form the nucleus of an ever-growing and impressive collection of prints and drawings. Canadian works from the 18th century to the present day, as well as European, American and Asian works from the 15th to the 21st century each make up about half of the prints and drawings holdings.

Ranked among the finest of its kind, the collection of photographs comprises over 44,000 Canadian and International works from the 19th century to the present day.

The Study Room is open by appointment only, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. To request an appointment, please fill out all sections of the Visitor Application Form and send it at least two weeks in advance for individual appointments and four weeks in advance for academic group appointments. A member of our staff will contact you after having assessed your request, verified our availabilities as well as the accessibility of the artworks requested.

At the time of your appointment, please arrive at the Curatorial Wing Security Desk 10 minutes in advance to register. Please note that food, drinks and ink pens are not allowed in the Study Room, and be advised that all visitors will be asked to leave outdoor apparel as well as bags, purses and umbrellas in the lobby of the Study Room. Cell phones must be turned off and left in the lobby too. Photography may be allowed upon permission. Sketching, however, is not permitted in the Study Room.
